Stiffness improvement of a topologically optimised gear manufactured by SLM

STIFFNESS IMPROVEMENT OF A TOPOLOGICALLY OPTIMISED GEAR MANUFACTURED BY SLM

At Egile AeroTransmissions division, we are specialists in the aeronautical sector, designing and manufacturing power transmission reducers for turbines, turboprops and turbofans and main transmission components for helicopters.

GEAR TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS

Vibration and noise of gear sets are directly related to the whole characteristics of transmission systems. The loose of stiness is one of the most detrimental characteristics of these systems, that worsen flank-centred contact between teeth. This would, in fact, deteriorate performance and increase the noise of gear transmission systems. So maximization of stiness is always a key factor on the design of gear transmission systems.

In this regards, additive manufacturing technology allows re-design of components, placing material only where it is needed according to stress distribution, allowing improvement of stiness.

STIFFNESS INCREASE AFTER TOPOLOGY OPTIMISATION PROCESS

Topology optimisation enables the increase of gear sti ness without compromising gear weight. A new conception of gear with organic shape in the areas non-subjected to geometrical constrictions was designed.

Stress distribution of the topologically optimised geometry

After topology optimisation a better performance of the gear was obtained by reducing 3 important factors: Weight (-400 g), maximum displacement (-25 %) and maximum Von Misses stress (-8%).
